Curious reflection...

It's less than two weeks until the end of this project, so I want to look back on what I've done so far and make a decision on where to take it.

I have learned so many new processes and revisited a lot of creative processes I've not done for a while.

It was initially a bit overwhelming with so much to choose from.

My initial idea from the project brief was to look at autumnal natural objects, keep it seasonal and looking into the details of patterns and altering them or switching them in some way. The colour photo copies of the mono print achieved a way to generate, quite quickly lots of altered images of an original work.

I had initially been working with a leaf design but when I changed the colour of this it serendipitously reminded me of the dead dragon fly my son found in our garden and from then on it was all about the dragon fly shape.

Scanning the dragonfly highlighted the intricate details and enabled me to make papercuts for a screen print.

I really enjoyed the screen print processes and the result was a really clear crisp image. Its definitely one to revisit.

However for this project I'm wanting to created something more organic and handmade.

Ceramics was initially an experimental introduction, I like the use of clay for this project as its a natural material and could be used to imitate natural forms and sculpture.I want to develop the dragonfly clay sculpture into my final piece in someway.

I like the use of the hessian material and wire form as again its working with natural materials. However I didn't think the material body of the dragon fly was successful, in terms of what I was trying to achieve, it was too chunky and soft, but it was a material I have never worked with and liked the use of it as a wing especially combined with water and ink to create a pattern on it that was very watery and fluid and reminded me of the flower fairy illustrations that I loved as a child.

More experiments with wings inspired by a recycle and re use spirit and the stained glass windows of St Marys led me to a paper cut wing with coloured plastic sweet wrappers to create a coloured translucency. It had a bit of the primary school art vibe about it due to the nature of the materials, it was too brash and bright.I still thought it was an interesting experiment and the paper cut worked really well as a photogram..

The photograms, this really helped to cement the Victorian influence on this project. I made a photogram of the dragonfly and it turned out some great details, like a ghostly x-ray or Victorian silhouettes, which again brought me back to my paper cuts and fairy silhouette.

My research into natural history, pinned insects, Charles Darwin, art Nouveau led me to the idea of cabinets of curiosity and the nature of collecting things and what it means. I feel it fuses all these  ideas and techniques together as they are all coming from a place of CURIOSITY.

With an illusive title of curiosity I want to combine a few of the techniques I have learned along with found natural objects from my own personal collection. To combine the natural with the made.
