"Joseph Cornell (December 24, 1903 – December 29, 1972) was an American visual artist and film-maker, one of the pioneers and most celebrated exponents of assemblage. Influenced by the Surrealists, he was also an avant-garde experimental filmmaker. He was largely self-taught in his artistic efforts, and improvised his own original style incorporating cast-off and discarded artifacts. He lived most of his life in relative physical isolation, caring for his mother and his disabled brother at home, but remained aware of and in contact with other contemporary artists." wikipaedia
When I started my Curiosity box I was told it was similar to Joseph Cornell..and after looking at his work I'm enchanted.
Cornell makes his work from found objects and are similar to the Curiosity cabinet/ museum aesthetic I've been researching.
Using found objects, self taught artist Cornell made a vast variety of these "boxes" they are dealing with memories, real and imagined and seem to be trapped in time, all quite nostalgic and dreamlike but with the museum type of documentation feel using natural history and human history and fantasy elements.
