The sacred heart of Jesus is a very recognised Catholic symbol. I find it relevant to my research for its religious links, the strong visual symbolism and the fact that is a piece of human anatomy- the heart - linking the heart and the soul. I am not a Catholic. I keep an open mind to spirituality, I'm very interested in religious imagery for this project, as a means of devotion and also a means of propaganda... exploring the idea of the soul.
Below are just a few images I screen grabbed from a google search. Looking at the elements that make up the sacred heart: the fire, thorns, crucifix and heart sometimes pierced with an arrow. The shape of the heart is often more similar in shape to an anatomical heart rather that a stylised "love " heart shape.
