Sketchbook

Photographs of my physical Sketchbook and work space showing progression of ideas.

I have been working from a few different sketch books and separate pieces of work, this is collation of that work. There are a few reoccurring images/ characters that I have developed through this project, with the mixed media development works from my sketch books I wanted to elaborate on those characters with some illustrative style collages.

This came about when I mopped up an ink spill with one of these little envelopes. I like the scale of the envelopes and had intended to print small ants on them to represent wage slips, but there is only so much time to explore. I also had some gold flakes to hand so sprinkled them into the wet ink , I was  impressed by the texture and how well they stuck to the ink. I marked a few more envelopes with intentional symbols to accompany the abstract "accidents"

This is pretty wild  colour wise,I was trying to create a red sunset but the ink when diluted went shocking Pink! I like the little bird on this though.

A lady sending letters, fingerprints, bird.

All images used are developed from my own hand drawn sketches. I then traced them to transfer onto lino and plates, its also a useful way to quickly make variations of an image. I really like the opaque quality of the tracing paper and would like to work these into a layered collage.

I had a lot of loose images that I experimented with placement, working towards a collage, while collating my sketch book.

In developing some of the illustrative supporting ideas I have added red to the colour palette, to symbolise the union jack, incorporating the privilege of place, the British empire and current political climate. The Union Jack as a symbol has many connotations .
