Final Major Project Proposal 2023 FOLKLORE

For my final major project I'm interested in exploring Folklore as a starting point for my research. I'm particularly interested in the imagery and costume of traditional, rural celebrations and the branches of modern subculture around this. I'm interested in folk stories and folk song, the purpose of this oral storytelling history and how its rooted into the landscape and the people.The reoccurrence of certain characters and animals and what they represent. Research Folklore is a very rich and broad area, I have ear marked a few starting points below for research . Ill be looking mainly at British folklore but will draw wider comparisons from European folklore and further afield if the research leads there. I will visit relevant exhibitions and museums to inform and inspire my work. The key exhibition is The folk costume exhibition " Making Mischief" at Compton Verney which I'm hoping will give me lots of visual and historic information to drive the proj...

The Wolf

Folk and fairy tales share many similarities. Thinking about the role of animals as a depiction of human character and cautionary tales. The wolf is sly and charming to get what he wants. The victims are children, or animals that are seen as weaker, vulnerable physically and mentally and easily tricked. Yet all these tales show the wolf to be defeated. I really like the illustration, these books are super nostalgic to me and reading them as a child forms ideas of how you view the world. Im thinking of playing around with this imagery, especially the images of the wolf and incorporating it into some print design, THE PREDATOR WOLF AT THE DOOR THE WOLF REVEALS HIS NATURE THE WOLF IS DEFEATED

Transparencies/ linoprint and mulitiples

the beauty of lino print is the ability to create multiples and experiment with colour and composition all from one original block. however here I have photocopied the lino print I made on to both acetate and tracing paper and then experimented with composition and layering. I think the above image has a depth of colour with the black over the red. its also a bit 3d effect around the edges. This is a layer of three images, ( hard to photograph as the light catches the reflective surface of the acetate. I think it would work better with two layers of acetate with out the tracing paper as that makes it a little too blurry. again was thinking to create a kind of art deco style feel where an image of women stretches out in a row like a dance troupe or an endless reflection of mirrors. I think this effect would be better created by cutting around the images before layering
