Church plan

Plan and elevation outside St Marys.

From the beginning of this project I knew I wanted to make something about the plan of the building
the shape and location of the church is like an island within the city.
I got the idea to scale up the marble plan of the church outside the building.
I took a rubbing from it as its in marble relief. and scaled it up by nine to fit nicely into my exhibition space.
I had originally thought of doing it on thick paper or card but wasn't sure it would be the right look, and would also easily damage. I found some rolls of pvc fabric in the studio.
that is also not the right look, however the back of the fabric is a woven cotton effect which is also
I first thought of using white to match my over all color scheme white and gold, but when I saw the green shade with the worn effects either side it reminded me of a runner that you would get within a church but also gives the impression of the outline of a ruin on grass, as much of my project was based outside, in the church yard I wanted to represent this in some way.

I scaled up the drawing and mapped it out in pencil. I used a basic pva glue to apply the gold leaf and brushed off the excess once fully dried. This gave a nice aged effect that I wanted.
As this is a temporary work  to be placed on the floor  I haven't been precious about fixing the gold with varnish, as I will be inviting the viewer to walk over the work, as an alter to be approached in order to view the other pieces. It will be interesting to see  how people react to this and if they will step onto the work without being prompted.

Trying Gold leaf on the back of the pvc fabric to see how it holds and if its suitable for the floor plan.
Its a nice aged rubbed off effect similar to what I achieved on the flags but this fabric is much heavier.

Rubbing taken from the plaque, I like the effect of the rubbed pencil lines rather than drawn on pencil lines below
I dont like the effect of the straight drawn on pencil, a direct rubbing wont be large enough for the floor so the idea to use gold leaf will not only tie in with the other pieces of work but will also give a similar uneven effect as the graphite rubbing and also be very striking.

Trying out the green fabric in my exhibition space. The green fabric is the correct width and fits better, the white fabric would need doubling up.

Trying out the gold on the green fabric. The colours are really nice together
I like the earthy green colour against the gold.

Finished floor plan

Churches were built in the shape of a cross, facing East ( towards the sun) the holy land. On this plan I have noted the main parts of the church.
