Bennerley Viaduct Visit

STRUCTURE

I took a research trip to the viaduct on new years day. I last visited in the summer before this project so I wanted to visit again and explore in detail areas of interest. I was looking at the structure of the viaduct itself as well as the landscape it stands in.

I took lots of photographs from different angles underneath the viaduct to show the structure and details and the way the lines intertwine from different view points. I changed the images to monochrome to enhance the drama of this huge Victorian bridge.

I'd like to try making a dry point etching with black ink based on these images as I'm inspired by the works of Katja Lang and a lot of the editing i did on these images i did with her work in mind and with the intention of using some of these images to make dry point images.

the canal runs under the viaduct

I love the contrast of these images, very industrial and powerful, when taken away from the softness and colour of the surrounding countryside. it has a more cold, wintery feeling.
also photographing sections, abstracts it slightly.

the jumble of bare winter branches growing by the canal side form thire own dark structure, organic but mirroring the criss cross forms of the viaduct as it peaks through.

from the canal side  "viewing point" the first time it comes into view is quite a sight, the landscape is totally rural from this perspective and could be a similar sight you'd see a centaury ago.

WATER

The following images taken canal side all show clear reflections of the trees.
I like the mirror image, It makes me think in printing terms of tessellating block prints or simply to fold the page on wet ink to create a copy.
Its of particular intrest to the box prints I made that feel similar to reflections of houses next to water.
gives me the idea to combine these structures with reflecting properties of the landscape.
Playing with images, turning the angles and making repeats.
The structure of the viaduct is a continuous line that could stretch on forever in terms of its symmetry and sameness.
Im always thinking" how can this translate to print " whenever Im looking at imagery or researching, I want to develop the theme of prints Ive made so far.

MAPS/ SIGNAGE

Map of the area on the information stand at the viewing point. It's the same area that I made my lino cut map of. The surfaced is raised so I was able to lift the image with a graphite rubbing.
