Contemporary, commercial print makers

This page is research into two contemporary artists that I admire and who both sell their work commercially.

One is working in carboard and one in lino print, I found both artists inspiring in my approach to this project in terms of what visual language can be achieved through these different mediums.

 LAURA ARTEAGA CHARLTON

This artist makes abstract prints with cardboard packaging, She inspired me to try this approach, below is her artist statement that explains her practice.

She tends to print in monotone and large scale. I like the layers and faint impressions that blur out the solid block of colour.

I don't want to copy her work, I see this medium as very versatile in its variety of  approaches and outcomes.

As I'm working within a brief my work isn't just about the image or dominated by one approach it's also about making my work site specific.

You can see at the bottom right corner is a mc Donald's happy meal box. I like that is still recognisable while becoming also something abstract. It reminds me of found remnants from the past, safely documented displayed in a museum of the future.

Sarah Kirby

Sarah Kirby is a Leicester based print maker/ artist. She makes prints of local landmarks and buildings. I really like her use of lino print, carving lines to create fields and sky , creates a energy and direction in the line work.

I really like the composition of this print. How she flattens and distorts the buildings in order to fit them , map like into the image, along with the big sunburst of  energy behind the church.
thinking of alternative ways to compose an image that is site specific, to make it both recognisable but also  stylised.
