For my final major project I'm interested in exploring Folklore as a starting point for my research.
I'm particularly interested in the imagery and costume of traditional, rural celebrations and the branches of modern subculture around this.
I'm interested in folk stories and folk song, the purpose of this oral storytelling history and how its rooted into the landscape and the people. The reoccurrence of certain characters and animals and what they represent.
Research
Folklore is a very rich and broad area, I have ear marked a few starting points below for research . Ill be looking mainly at British folklore but will draw wider comparisons from European folklore and further afield if the research leads there.
I will visit relevant exhibitions and museums to inform and inspire my work.
The key exhibition is The folk costume exhibition " Making Mischief" at Compton Verney which I'm hoping will give me lots of visual and historic information to drive the project.
I'm planning to visit rural locations, Derbyshire in particular as its local and has many small villages with regional customs and is rich in folk customs.
I'm interested to look at books of folklore and fairy tales and for reference and imagery and I will also make use of the vast online resources available. The folk lore society has a lot of online information as well as hosting regular online talks on various subjects.
Looking at folklore in modern culture, music and film.
I will make sketches, photographs and written notes of ideas and observations
Artist research
Looking into other artist who have used elements of folklore as inspiration for their work.
Look at artist who use similar approaches or materials.
look at folk artist/ outsider art
look at fashion and costume designers
Technical research
Look at traditional arts and crafts that would feature in folk lore such as wood work, ceramics, embroidery, wool spinning.
Look at methods that utilise natural materials, such as egg shell ceramics, weaving with natural fibers,
Approach / budget
I will experiment with a range of tried and tested techniques, such as direct print and lino. I want to use textile, to bring in an element of costume and I feel drawn to use lots of natural organic materials, reflective of the landscape and crude methods of folk art.
I've the idea to only use things that I find or am given and to re purpose and re use things that I already have. In the spirit of sustainability and resourcefulness of using whats to hand and also as a way to guide the style of the work in a folk art aesthetic.
In terms of budget, I will still be buying materials especially for the initial experimental stage. The main materials of the final piece will be salvage.
I will use a lot of my budget on research trips and reading material.

Event by the British museum of folklore and London college of fashion.
At Compton Verney.
This is perfect for what I have in mind for my own project.
I would love to visit the museum of witch craft again in Boscastle- it's quite a distance- North Cornwall. I could maybe combine it with this year's summer Holiday- worth noting they sometimes have an artist in residence- This artist looks interesting and will add her to my research.
Signed up to The folklore society online archives and newsletters.
Following the museum of folklore on Instagram.
They don't have a permanent location but do put on regular exhibitions at various locations in the UK such as the costume exhibition.
It would be worth tagging them in my work and making contact about future exhibitions for research and exhibition opportunity just making connections with people working in this area of interest.
Generally making contact with places of interest and organisations that share this interest for research and future collaboration.
Tate folklore exhibition. 2014
This is in the past however online archives still available.
Ordered this book to add to my reading research.
The devil in folklore and folk music.
Looking at cautionary and moral tales such as my old lady bird collection. The role of animals/ archetypes. Universal symbols that are imbedded in our minds from a young age.
Looking into folk music and the links between all these things. A way of telling stories across many art forms, combining the traditional tales with the supernatural. The devil was an accepted character an evil that was personified and always present.
