Marc Quinn- Bread Sculptures

Marc Quin is a British artist and sculptor who describes his work as exploring what it means to be human today.

His sculptural work with bread is of particular interest to my project as ive been working with food stuff to create sculpture.
Bread is a basic human food, detailed in the bible and many folkloric tales.
The language of using bread as an art medium suggest domesticity, hunger, survival, ritual and community.
I'm really interlink the hand sculptures . He traced around his own hand to create a series of bread sculptures. The symbolic reference to gand mande, kneeling of bread the deep human involvement of survival as well as the more spiritual aspects of prayer. The body of christ.
The method of working with bread creates an ever changing sculpture. As its baked it rises and drips and changes form as it does when it decays.
Mirroring the expected and unexpected cycles of life.
