Artist research- THE PROCESSION

 The Procession

I love this installation work by Huw Locke.

Its folk art on a global scale. I like how he combines many different cultural references within the characters and the costumes. It has familiarity and strangeness, and draws attention to the fact that so much similarity within folk culture all over the world and this work is uniting and celebratory and inclusive.

He describes it as a puzzle with clues to solve.

Saying he wanted to make some thing attractive to draw the audience in, and for them then to ask questions and see a deeper meaning in the work than just the showmanship.

He purposefully displayed it at floor level and made it human scale to make it feel interactive. He says its about hope, that though these characters may be marching through difficult times, they are marching together to a better place.

He talks about the use of materials, the luxurious and bold fabrics against more rough natural materials being intentional and the use of cardboard as a structure as its payable and strong and has links to playful child hood curiosity while also being throw away.

He hand printed some of the fabrics( which is definitely an area of interest for my own project) he also had some of the fabrics purposefully made/ printed( not an option for me as I intend to only work with found/ salvaged materials for my project as it fits better into my concept, and budget!)
