Sailors Hobby Horse Print

Inspired by the Sailors Hobby Horse costume at The Making Mischief exhibition I made this small lino cut featuring the face/ mask of  the costume. I played around with the lay out, printing multiples and adding background details with stamp other designs I had carved,
I really like how this little character has turned out. Its  a little creepy/ clown like and with the use of bright colours I think it has that weird folk art aesthetic.
the effect is quite illustrative. the above image reminds me of birthday wrapping paper from the 70s.
I think it would work well as a decorative/ alternative commercial product design, maybe better suited to the gift shop than the gallery

Playing with suggestion. Using some letter stamps  and the letters from the word devil/ evil to add to the creepiness of the design in a fun graphic way and playing with the assumption that  folk costume has this sinister side.

Below is an extract from " the magical year" by Danu Forest giving a little info of the origin of the hobby horse or "obby oss" in local dialect.
