Cosmic Egg - Andrew Logan

Described by the artist as" A black hole sucking in all images around it"

Andrew Logans " Cosmic egg" is a 12 ft tall egg shaped sculpture of mosaiced mirror glass and found objects.

It was commissioned by London Council for the Battersea Park Easter peace parade and has since toured the country and is now at home in his museum of sculpture in Wales (  name dropping time- my friend and ex next door neighbour Katherine recently relocated to Wales and now works as an art assistant at his museum)

I really liked the exhibition of his work at the bonnington gallery last year and was struck by how joyful and colourful his work was and I just loved it.

The egg as a universal symbol of life and rebirth and springtime has so many ritualistic, folklore associations so I feel inspired to inclued it as part if my easter research and art inspiration.

Logan was inspired by his first visit to India and this work references Indian culture and mytholgy while incorporating the universal symbols of the egg.

His description of it as a black hole is reference to its reflective surface, it appears to suck in the work around it whole being its own separate thing.

I love the scale of the work, what creature / idea would be birthed from an egg of this size?

Logan takes very a commonplace object as a starting point and creates something extortionary.

Andrews work is very flamboyant and often uses found objects within his sculpture, something that I also enjoyed about Sophie Ryders sculpture, I think the addition of found objects adds an extra personal layer to the process of the work and something I'm trying with my approach- letting the objects drive the work as it fits into my folk theme.

The colour and symbolism in Logans work feels very celebratory and wild and in many ways has similarities with folk art

I've been collecting eggshells for the purpose of making  ceramics from them.

I feel inspired to use my ground egg shells to make a large egg and decorate it in some way.

I'm still not sure what my final work will be. I'm enjoying playing with the idea of costume and maybe creating a folk custom/ event of my own ..a collection of ideas into a costume or range of objects. So the inclusion of an egg or the symbol of an egg to represent an element of this is certainly an option.
