"We Walked The Earth" is an instalation at the Danish Pavilion in Venice by Dansh artist Uffe Isolotte and curated by Jacob Lillemose.
Described by the artist as "a drama of life and death, of hope and despair,in a transcutaneous world inhabited by Centaurs"
It's set in the future and blends Danish farm life with science fiction. It's a huge instalation that fills the whole pavilion as it becomes a fictional home for a family of centaurs, and seems to be a frozen moment, an aftermath of some untold event. The artist was trying to capture a feeling of deep uncertainty exploring a future where humans and animals have become intertwined and asks the question " who do we become when the world we know no longer exists?"
I'd really love to see this in real life. I like the drama of it and the ambiguity.
In terms of my project this has many elements of folk but future folk - a cautionary tale from the future. Though it's set in the future it's still very organic, rather than the robotic/AI visions from cinematic science fiction.
I've been looking at blending animalistic materials, fur and feathers with natural objects and mutating the meanings of these things.
This artist is blending the human and the animal along with many organic elements.
I was inspired by this during my research in teams of looking forward and the transformative blending.
It also has a fantastical quality to it. The use Of mythical beasts being a part of evolution.
The work was made over a 2.5 year period and the artist said the events of covid and the Ukraine war shaped the work as our world becomes more hostile.
Myth and fantasy are often used as places of comfort and distraction from the outside world but the outside world is shaping this folk fiction.
It's like a strange dream. That you can't quite pin down
I really like the idea of this and would love to have such a huge and beautiful space to transform and make work for.
