Newstead ideas / Initial notes

Initial ideas/ notes after my visit

Knowing the place. Absorbing. Ghost. white lady resident ghost.

Using the space- possibilities/ limitations.

Blend in or stand out?

Time limit. Something lasting or something life limited?

Research other historic houses with installation

Byron / silhouette/ tattoo art portrait?  On what? Orange?

Wealth and privilege? Is all relative. What do you value? Things money can't buy. Privilege?

Race/ class/ gender

Trends : its cool/ novel In some circles to be working class now. Faux working class when it suits a person's image/ career.

The curator sought black artists to make the reactive works and I think that works really well and gives opportunity to reflect and re investigate the history of Newstead's involvement with slavery and open up discussion.

Photographs layered with screen print or lino cut of willow pattern style symbols

Look into modern art used in old buildings and the space.

Below the salt.

Privilege, art, chance,  money, location.

Disassociation, consumerism,  history of items, furniture, teapot.

Changing ideas, historical buildings staying relevant. Look at religion too. Society.

Garden. Japanese. Tea.

Spaceplacepractice.

Wildlife, birds, plants, inside and outside.

Ai Weiwei is a activist and politically motivated artist. I've included this image of him famously breaking a Ming dynasty vase as a performance art as  it came to mind when looking at the artifacts in Newstead, and the fine balance of precious and privilege and the breaking down of these things
