"Henry Ford Hospital" Frida Kahlo 1932
This painting is intriguing as I know Kahlo had an interest in anatomy and wanted to be a medical illustrator. She has combined this aspect with her surreal style to tell the story of her miscarriage. Using both internal and external elements of the human body to express the physical and emotional pain of this experience in a self portrait. The image of the pelvis interests me as I've been using a pelvis as the base of one of my lino prints. shes referencing this body part as I am, in relation to this female experience of child bearing, The preliminary sketch has a crescent moon in the top right corner that is crying, noting that link between the lunar cycle and menstrual cycle. |
