A lot of the artists that have come into college to speak with us for the professional practice assignment so far have featured artist who's work or approach is centred around a place, this inspired me with choosing my project and continues to interest me as mys project develops.
Rachel Carters work on The pilgrim woman was centered around the journey from one lace to another a pilgrimage of travel from the midland to america on the mayflower , she is also looking into the past and history as a source of inspiration. combining new techniques with ancient crafts. Also looking into the lives of ordinary. local women that history has forgotten. i found her talk really inspirational in terms of subject and research.
Mik Godlys work considering Silesia was based around his mothers homeland. notably a place he hasn't visited in person and conducted all his research either on line or though his family history/ photographs. So much detail in his work and his reseach. in terms of approach, challenging himself with new methods and also the editing and decision making in his own work between using water colour, ink and digital paintings.
Rosemary McLennan Crump community based works centred round the town of Bulwell. She took on a character to get local people involved with the history of their local area and to engage them in creating art and sharing stories. Rediscovering forgotten roots and finding inspiration in your local area, I also found this inspirational in terms of research and location.
