Marina Warner - fairy tales

 Marina Warner has written many books on the subject of the fairy tale/ folk tale.

Her unpicking and characterisation of these tales is very instersting to my reseach. as ive been looking at the way certain charachters/ charicteristics are representaend through story. through animals and certain stereotypes, typcast.

she describes the fairy tale as essentally being a story of suffering and escape. though there is often a happy ending this ending is not elaborated on al all, its the suffering, prediciment that makes up the story.

In terms of women representation through storty. the title of these stories " old wifes tales" a literal, modern traslation of this meaning the equvilant of "fake news" fake news spread by women. or the mother gooses tales that were actually written by a man who used this female non de pume to separate himself from this low brow fiction.


she talks about the villian of the stories and the stories often being concerned with local fears, 

Agin refering back to the mother, the maiden , the crone

The maided is a prise, a posetion and is often trapped, protected. the mother is  a womean perfomeing her main femwl duty. the crome the old woman is often painted as a with a s scary , her body a thing of horror, and is still very much refelective of societyie veiws on aging- womens againg. as a form of shame or failure,. and if you are unashemen then all the more fearful. because there is a power there that is being denines , the male commentray on womens bodies and
